Custom T-Shirts in Bulk: Cotton Weights, Fits & Printing Explained

By The Velocity Wear Team

The t-shirt is most brands’ first product and the one customers judge fastest. A thin, twisted tee tells the wrong story; a well-cut, substantial shirt sells the brand before a word is read. Here is how to order custom tees in bulk that actually feel premium.

Cotton type and GSM

Quality starts with the yarn. Combed, ring-spun cotton is smoother, stronger and softer than cheaper open-end cotton — it pills less and prints cleaner. Weight (GSM) then sets the feel:

  • 150–180 GSM — light and breathable; good for value and warm climates.
  • 190–220 GSM — the everyday all-rounder most retail tees sit at.
  • 230 GSM+ — heavyweight, structured and premium; the boxy-fit streetwear feel.

Fit changes everything

The same graphic reads completely differently on a slim classic tee versus an oversized boxy cut. Decide the fit first — regular, fitted, relaxed or oversized — because it defines your sizing, your drape and your brand’s whole silhouette.

Choose the right print method

  • DTF — full-colour and photographic artwork with no per-design minimum; ideal for testing.
  • Screen printing — the most cost-effective, durable finish for larger single-design runs.
  • Embroidery — a premium, tactile finish for small chest logos.

Spend on the blank, not just the print. A perfect print on a cheap tee still feels cheap — the fabric is the first thing a customer touches.

Branding makes it a label, not a blank

Custom neck labels (or tear-away tagless prints), woven labels, hem tabs and branded packaging turn a printed blank into a brand customers recognise and return to. These details cost little at volume and lift perceived value significantly.

Buying in bulk

Test several designs at a low minimum, then scale your winners into volume tiers for better unit pricing. Confirm fabric, GSM and a sample before a large run, and lock landed cost and lead times for the UK, USA or Europe.

Quick Answers

Common questions about t-shirts — answered.

For an everyday retail tee, 190–220 GSM combed ring-spun cotton is the sweet spot. For a heavyweight, structured streetwear feel, choose 230 GSM or above.

DTF reproduces full-colour and photographic detail with no per-design minimum, making it ideal for colourful or complex artwork and for testing. Screen printing becomes more cost-effective for large runs with few colours.
