Custom Hotel Towels: A Buyer's Guide for Hospitality Brands

By The Velocity Wear Team

Selecting the right hotel towel means balancing GSM for guest luxury, construction for commercial laundry durability, size for intended use and branding for brand visibility — getting any of these wrong is costly when you are ordering at scale from a 50-piece MOQ.

Understanding GSM for Hotel Towels

GSM (grams per square metre) is the most important specification for hotel towels. It determines weight, absorbency and perceived luxury.

  • 400–500 GSM: lightweight, quick-drying — suitable for pool or spa environments where fast turnover matters.
  • 500–600 GSM: the hospitality sweet spot — substantial feel without excessive drying time in commercial laundry.
  • 600–700 GSM: ultra-plush and heavy — a premium statement for five-star properties, but slower to dry and heavier on laundry costs.
  • Most four-star hotels use 550 GSM as a practical luxury balance.

Standard Hotel Towel Sizes

  • Bath sheet: 90×170 cm — the most generous option, associated with premium properties.
  • Bath towel: 70×140 cm — standard for most hotel bathrooms.
  • Hand towel: 50×90 cm — essential for bathroom vanity areas.
  • Flannel / face cloth: 30×30 cm — high per-room volume, often the most frequently replaced item.
  • Pool towel: 80×160 cm or larger, often in a contrasting colour or with branding specific to the pool area.

White vs Coloured Towels

White remains the dominant choice for hotel towels for practical reasons: it can be laundered at high temperatures with bleach, stains are visible and easily addressed, and white signals cleanliness to guests. Coloured towels are used to differentiate pool and spa areas or to align with a property's brand palette. If you choose colour, confirm colourfastness ratings for commercial laundering — colours must hold through repeated high-temperature wash cycles.

Dobby Borders: Function and Aesthetics

A dobby border is a woven strip along the short edges of the towel, created on a dobby loom during production. It serves three functions: reinforcing the edge to prevent fraying through commercial laundering, adding a decorative finish and providing a surface for woven branding. A jacquard-woven logo in the dobby border is the most durable and premium branding option — it cannot fade, crack or peel as printed decoration can.

Branding Options for Hotel Towels

  • Jacquard weave: logo woven into the dobby border during production — the most durable option, ideal for long-life premium towels.
  • Embroidery: applied after production; excellent for detailed logos and initials; withstands commercial laundering well.
  • DTF print: applied to the towel face; visually striking for bold graphic logos but less durable over high-temperature commercial wash cycles than woven or embroidered options.
  • Heat transfer: lower cost but the least durable for commercial laundry environments — avoid for high-rotation hotel stock.

"A towel with a woven border and embroidered logo signals craftsmanship before a guest even touches it — that first impression is part of your hospitality brand."

Commercial Laundry Durability

Hotel towels are typically laundered 150–300 times in their lifespan. To withstand this, specify ring-spun or combed cotton construction (not open-end spun), double-turned hems, and confirm the towel's wash rating — you want a towel rated for 60°C minimum, preferably 75°C. Ask your supplier to confirm the specific construction grade for commercial laundry.
